Gloucestershire Strengthen T20 Blast Squad with England World Cup Winner Dawid Malan

Gloucestershire have secured the services of England T20 World Cup winner Dawid Malan for the upcoming 2026 and 2027 T20 Blast seasons. The 38-year-old batsman recently parted ways with Yorkshire by mutual consent, despite signing a two-year contract extension last December.

Malan, who has earned 22 Test caps for England, joined Yorkshire from Middlesex in 2019 and amassed an impressive 3,656 runs across 78 matches in all formats during his tenure. Reflecting on his departure, Malan commented, “I have enjoyed six happy and successful seasons with Yorkshire, but feel now is the right time for the club to make a fresh start,” a fresh start that will take place in Bristol with Gloucestershire.

During his 13 years with Middlesex, Malan built a strong reputation, becoming pivotal in Yorkshire’s T20 setup over five years, captaining the team in 2025 and finishing as their leading T20 Blast run-scorer in both 2023 and 2024. His T20 pedigree includes winning the predecessor to the Vitality Blast with Middlesex in 2008, along with two The Hundred titles: with Trent Rockets in 2022, where he topped the scoring charts, and with the Oval Invincibles in 2024.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Malan said, “Gloucestershire are a team with real ambition to challenge for the T20 Blast next season, and I am pleased and excited to be joining the club. Speaking with Jon Lewis and Mark Alleyne makes clear the scale of their ambition. They are building a strong squad, and I am eager to contribute.”

Director of Cricket Jon Lewis welcomed the signing, stating: “Players of Dawid’s calibre rarely become available domestically. When we heard he might join us, we acted quickly—knowing he would be an invaluable addition. I know Dawid well from the England men’s team and am confident he’ll be a perfect fit in our dressing room. Beyond his talent, he’s a fantastic professional and person to have around.”

Lewis added, “His track record speaks volumes. He was Yorkshire’s leading T20 run-scorer last year and has previously topped the world T20 batting rankings. Bringing someone of his experience and global pedigree into our squad is a significant coup for Gloucestershire. We’re excited to see him play a pivotal role on the Seat Unique Stadium pitch.”

On the international stage, Malan stands out as one of England’s most consistent white-ball batsmen. He is among the rare few to have scored centuries in all three international formats. His unbeaten 103 remains England’s fifth-highest T20 International score, while his commanding 140 off 107 balls against Bangladesh in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup ranks as the fourth-highest individual England score at any World Cup. That innings is one of six ODI centuries he has achieved.

Malan’s 140 runs in Perth during the 2017-18 Ashes was a career highlight in a challenging tour for England. His exceptional T20 form propelled him to the top of the ICC T20 batting rankings and made him the fastest player ever to reach 1,000 T20 International runs in just 24 innings.

Although an injury prevented him from featuring in the 2022 T20 World Cup final, Malan’s contributions during the tournament were vital to England’s title-winning campaign.

Beyond international cricket, Malan has built a robust global franchise career, currently playing in Nepal—the ninth domestic franchise league he has competed in, which includes prestigious leagues such as the Big Bash and IPL. Earlier in 2025, he added another trophy by winning the Bangladesh Premier League with Fortune Barishal.

Gloucestershire’s acquisition of Dawid Malan signals their strong intent to compete at the highest level in white-ball cricket and brings world-class experience and leadership to their squad.
