Gloucestershire celebrated their first victory of the season with a commanding 10-wicket win over Derbyshire in the Rothesay County Championship Division Two clash at the Central Co-op County Ground.
A disciplined bowling performance was the cornerstone of Gloucestershire’s success, spearheaded by Gabe Bell, who took 3 for 44, and Will Williams, claiming 3 for 50. Their efforts restricted Derbyshire to 252 runs, with valuable resistance from Matt Montgomery, who scored a well-made 74, and Luis Reece contributing 50, preventing the hosts from suffering an innings defeat.
Chasing a modest target of 36 runs, Cameron Bancroft and Ben Charlesworth efficiently sealed the victory in less than five overs, securing Gloucestershire 21 crucial points, while Derbyshire earned 3 points.

With the threat of rain looming later in the afternoon, Gloucestershire’s seamers started aggressively, taking two wickets in successive overs. Montgomery reached his maiden first-class half-century, but soon after, Gabe Bell bowled a probing short ball that led to Ben Aitchison’s dismissal for a catch on the return.
Martin Andersson survived a significant lbw appeal, but the following delivery from Will Williams caused an outside edge caught cleanly by James Bracey. Derbyshire’s hopes dimmed further when Williams bowled Brooke Guest after extracting late movement, reducing the hosts to a precarious position.
Despite support from Reece, who held firm for 11 overs, the introduction of spin brought Gloucestershire closer to victory. Graeme van Buuren’s successful appeal dismissed Montgomery, sending Derbyshire into deeper trouble at 165 for 7.
A missed catch by Miles Hammond denied Gloucestershire an immediate wicket, allowing Zak Chappell to persist alongside Reece. However, Gloucestershire’s persistence paid off when Williams bowled Reece and Bell promptly caught Shoaib Bashir, further denting Derbyshire’s chance to avoid defeat.
Muhammad Abbas offered some resistance alongside Chappell, but Ed Middleton’s bowling struck at the right moment before tea, dismissing Abbas. With the match effectively decided, Bancroft and Charlesworth quickly dispatched the remaining runs as Derbyshire tactically bowled spin to maintain their over rate.
Gloucestershire’s comprehensive performance marked a turning point in their campaign, delivering a much-needed boost as they accumulate 21 points from the match.
