Gloucestershire County Cricket Club has announced the signing of seasoned left-handed batter Tom Alsop on a three-year contract commencing next season. The 30-year-old arrives in Bristol from Sussex, where he has established a strong reputation in county cricket, bolstered by his participation in high-profile franchise tournaments such as The Hundred, the Big Bash League (BBL), and the International League T20 (ILT20).
Alsop expressed his enthusiasm about the move, saying, “I’m delighted to sign for Gloucestershire; the club, through Jon Lewis, has a clear vision of where they want to get to, and I hope to contribute significantly to that journey. I’m really looking forward to the opportunities ahead, both on and off the pitch. Being a Wiltshire native, it will also be great to be closer to home.”

Alsop brings considerable expertise in the Vitality Blast, having represented Hampshire and Sussex across 101 T20 matches. He has amassed 2,101 runs at an impressive strike rate of 130.98, including 182 fours and 66 sixes, with a highest score of 87 not out. One notable career highlight was his explosive innings of 68 from 35 balls for Sussex against Surrey in 2024, featuring a half-century off just 25 deliveries, which helped Sussex secure a place in the knockout stages.
Beginning his career in the National Counties competition with Wiltshire, Alsop transitioned to first-class cricket with Hampshire’s 2014 County Championship Division Two promotion-winning side. He became a regular in Hampshire’s Championship XI and recorded his maiden first-class century against Surrey in 2016. His standout first-class season came in 2023, when he scored a career-best 182 not out for Sussex against Leicestershire, surpassing his previous highest scores of 150 achieved in 2019 and 2022.
On the franchise cricket front, Alsop currently represents Sunrisers Leeds in The Hundred, having previously impressed with Trent Rockets during their 2024 campaign. His performances included a half-century against Birmingham Phoenix and a subsequent innings of 41 runs, finishing the tournament with a strike rate of 150.81 and helping the Rockets reach the 2025 final.
In Australia, Alsop featured for Brisbane Heat in the BBL between 2024 and 2026. Among his memorable performances was an unbeaten 42 from 26 balls in a crucial 2025 season fixture. Additionally, he has excelled in the ILT20 with Gulf Giants, averaging 45.33, and producing a remarkable unbeaten 85 against Sharjah Warriors.
Alsop’s sporting talent extends beyond cricket. He represented England at youth levels in both hockey and cricket, playing for England Under-16s in hockey before focusing on cricket. He earned England Under-19 honours, averaging 55.50 in Youth Test matches and scoring a notable 107 from 83 balls against South Africa in a Youth One-Day International at Trent Bridge.
In 2016, Alsop toured Sri Lanka with the England Lions, where he set a record partnership with Daniel Bell-Drummond in the fourth ODI. He made his senior List A debut against Gloucestershire in 2014 and has since become recognised as one of the country’s most reliable white-ball cricketers.
Alsop contributed significantly to Hampshire’s successful 2018 Royal London One-Day Cup campaign, scoring 248 runs in five innings. His highlights included an innings of 95 against Somerset and an important 72 off 75 balls in the final against Kent at Lord’s, where he became the youngest professional to score a half-century in a Lord’s one-day final. He maintained his strong form the following season with two additional domestic one-day centuries as Hampshire returned to the final in 2019.
