Gloucestershire have announced the signing of experienced left-handed batter Tom Alsop on a three-year contract, starting from next season.
The 30-year-old, who has made a name for himself in county cricket with Sussex, also boasts global franchise experience, having competed in The Hundred, the Big Bash League, and the International League T20.
Alsop expressed his enthusiasm about the move: “I’m delighted to sign for Gloucestershire; the club, via Jon Lewis, has a clear vision of where they want to get to and hopefully I can play my part in that. I’m really looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead on and off the pitch. Being a Wiltshire lad, it’ll also be nice to be closer to home too.”

Gloucestershire’s Director of Cricket, Jon Lewis, praised the new signing: “Tom is a fantastic batter with the ability to perform across all formats. His experience in franchise cricket and the domestic game makes him a fantastic addition to our squad. He has been a consistent performer for Sussex, Trent Rockets, and Hampshire, and importantly, he has shown great resilience in the County Championship. He has strong links to the West Country, especially Wiltshire, so it’s a delight to see him come to Bristol. Tom will be an important figure in our dressing room and help us continue to develop this squad.”
Alsop’s Vitality Blast credentials are impressive. Having played 101 T20 matches for both Hampshire and Sussex, he has scored 2,101 runs at a strike rate of 130.98. His tally includes 182 fours, 66 sixes, and a highest score of 87 not out. One memorable innings was a blistering 68 off 35 balls against Surrey in 2024, featuring a rapid half-century from 25 deliveries which helped Sussex reach the knock-out stages.
His first-class career began with Hampshire’s 2014 County Championship Division Two promotion-winning side, after playing National Counties cricket for Wiltshire. Alsop became a regular in Hampshire’s Championship squad and achieved his maiden first-class century against Surrey in 2016. His finest season came in 2023 when he scored a career-best 182 not out for Sussex against Leicestershire, surpassing previous high scores of 150 made while keeping wicket in 2019 and 2022.
On the franchise stage, Alsop currently represents Sunrisers Leeds in The Hundred, after an impressive stint with Trent Rockets. In 2024, he produced an outstanding campaign including a half-century against Birmingham Phoenix and ended the season with a strike rate of 150.81, helping the Rockets reach the final in 2025.
In Australia’s Big Bash League, Alsop played for Brisbane Heat between 2024 and 2026. A standout performance was an unbeaten 42 from 26 balls in a crucial 2025 match. He has also excelled in the International League T20 for Gulf Giants, averaging 45.33 and scoring a notable unbeaten 85 against Sharjah Warriorz.
Alsop’s sporting pedigree extends beyond cricket. Earlier in his youth, he represented England Under-16s in hockey before focusing fully on cricket, where he represented England Under-19s. He toured with England Youth teams to Australia and South Africa, averaging 55.50 in Youth Test cricket and scoring a swift 107 from 83 balls in a Youth ODI against South Africa.
In 2016, Alsop toured Sri Lanka with the England Lions and shared a record partnership with Daniel Bell-Drummond in the fourth ODI.
Alsop began his senior List A career in 2014 against Gloucestershire and quickly established himself as a consistent white-ball performer. He was a key player in Hampshire’s 2018 Royal London One-Day Cup triumph, scoring 248 runs in five innings, including a 95 against Somerset and 72 from 75 balls in the final against Kent at Lord’s. That final innings made him the youngest professional to score a half-century in a Lord’s one-day final. He maintained this form in 2019 with two more domestic one-day centuries, helping Hampshire reach the final once again.
