LOUIS Kimber played a gutsy innings of 66 runs to steer Northamptonshire to a hard-fought two-wicket win over Gloucestershire on the final day of the Rothesay County Championship Division Two match at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol.
Kimber, brought in midway as an injury replacement for Saif Zaid, arrived with 95 runs needed and four wickets in hand in a closely contested match. Displaying composure under pressure, the 29-year-old struck 11 fours and a six from 69 balls, guiding his side steadily towards the target of 249.
Australian Test player Nathan McSweeney contributed a valuable 46 runs, while Lewis McManus remained unbeaten on 22 to secure victory after Will Williams’ impressive bowling figures of 2-5 in 6.2 overs kept Gloucestershire competitive throughout.

Northamptonshire’s hard-fought win earned them 19 points, bolstering their promotion hopes, while Gloucestershire, now rooted at the bottom of Division Two, took just three points following their sixth loss in seven red-ball matches this season.
Gloucestershire head coach Mark Alleyne expressed cautious optimism despite the defeat: “There is a certain level of optimism because we have been competitive in recent games. The nature of this loss is a huge improvement on the early-season innings defeats. We’ve fought hard from start to finish. However, losing five out of six games is unprecedented for us and it’s a tough place to be. Injuries like Gabe Bell’s sore back today add to the challenges we face, especially with such a small bowling group.”
Alleyne also defended the pitch conditions, stating, “The pitch is exciting and encourages competitive cricket. Matches going into the fourth innings with both sides having a chance to win is exactly what fans want.”
Following overnight rain, heavy groundstaff work allowed play to resume by mid-morning with Northamptonshire at 144-5 needing 105 more runs. An injury to Bell led to Luke Charlesworth stepping in as a like-for-like replacement, but Gloucestershire still managed early breakthroughs with Williams dismissing nightwatchman Harry Conway lbw for five.
Kimber’s aggressive batting ramped up the tension, scoring boundaries against both Craig Miles and Matt Taylor as the visitors inched closer to their target. Williams struck again, removing McSweeney lbw to momentarily stem the flow of runs.
Charlesworth’s first Championship appearance in 2026 was met with force as Kimber hit him for four and six in quick succession, pushing Northamptonshire beyond 200 runs with the target shrinking.
Kimber’s quickfire half-century, reached off just 44 balls and punctuated by nine boundaries, left Gloucestershire scrambling. Williams returned to the attack but could not prevent Kimber from guiding the innings close to victory.
A late breakthrough from van Buuren bowled Kimber out, reducing Northamptonshire to 236-8 and exposing the tailenders. However, McManus steadied the ship, hitting the winning runs with a boundary off Taylor in the final moments before the lunch interval.
The defeat leaves Gloucestershire searching for answers as they look to arrest their slide from the bottom of the Division Two table.
