Gloucestershire Man Takes on Five Marathons in Five Days to Honor Family and Raise Funds

Mike Mills, a dedicated teacher and father of three from Gloucester, is pushing his limits by running five marathons in five consecutive days to support the Tom Love Trust. This remarkable effort is a heartfelt tribute to his cousin’s eldest son, Tom, who tragically passed away at just 21 years old in December 2022 after contracting an infectious disease while travelling in Africa.

“Tom was a magnificent young man. He was full of life and enthusiasm — truly brilliant. I wanted to do something meaningful for Tom, the cause, and his family, who have been left with a huge void,” Mike shares.

Having previously completed Ironman triathlons and endurance swims, Mike describes this marathon challenge as his toughest test yet. Setting off from Amersham, the Love family home, on April 25, he will run to Dover to mirror the first part of Tom’s journey when he left home in 2021. Coinciding with the London Marathon, Mike will incorporate it into his second day’s run, completing the five marathons in five days.

While balancing teaching full-time and fatherhood, Mike admits the mental and physical demands are intensely challenging. “It’s about fitting it all in — running, stretching, and feeling sorry for myself when necessary,” he says with a smile.

Mike’s motivation is fueled by the unwavering support of his partner, children, and family, who plan to cheer him on throughout the journey. Though he worries about the possibility of not completing the challenge, the thought of letting down Tom and his family drives him forward. “Music, memories, and even tears will keep me pushing through,” he explains. Past endurance events have inspired him to write encouraging messages from loved ones on his arms as a reminder of his purpose.

Aiming to raise £2,000, Mike has already secured over half his target despite minimal promotion. The Tom Love Trust funds and partners with numerous projects in the UK and Africa, supporting young people and community initiatives. They also encourage fundraising challenges like Mike’s and those Tom passionately embraced.

Mike’s extraordinary commitment is a tribute to a young life lost too soon and a beacon of hope for those the trust supports.
