Gloucestershire Hospitals IT Outage Linked to Server Overheating After Air Conditioning Failure

More details have emerged regarding the recent IT disruption impacting hospitals in Gloucestershire. The issue stemmed from one of the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s servers overheating after the air conditioning system in a server room failed.

The IT problems began on the morning of July 22, causing delays and changes to various appointments and procedures across the county’s hospitals. Hospital officials confirmed the incident was not related to a cyber attack but attributed it to a server malfunction.

According to a source speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the failure of the server room’s air conditioning led to the overheating of a key unit within the trust’s IT infrastructure. This overheating triggered widespread disruption to several IT systems.

On July 23, the trust provided an update stating, “We continue to experience disruption to some of our IT systems following the incident yesterday (Tuesday). We can confirm that this disruption has been the result of a server issue and is not a cyber incident. While some services have been restored, others remain intermittently affected and this is expected to continue throughout the day. Our teams are working hard to fully restore systems and minimise any impact on patient care.”

Officials have since reported gradual improvements in the situation as efforts to restore full IT functionality progress.
