Gloucestershire Hospitals Introduce Face Mask Requirement to Combat Rising Respiratory Infections

In response to a significant surge in flu cases and other respiratory illnesses nationwide, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has mandated the wearing of surgical face masks in crucial assessment areas at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH) and Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH).

This temporary measure aims to reduce the transmission of infections, safeguarding patients, visitors, and hospital staff during this challenging period. Similar policies have been adopted across the UK as hospitals confront increased admissions linked to respiratory conditions.

Masks must be worn upon entering specified medical departments, including the Emergency Departments at both hospital sites, the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at GRH, the Frailty Assessment Service (FAS), the Acute Haematology Oncology Unit (AHOU) at CGH, the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) at GRH, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) at both hospitals, the Paediatric Admissions Unit (PAU) at GRH, and the Maternity Triage at GRH.

The Trust will provide surgical masks at the entrances to these areas for convenience. Visitors and patients unable to wear a mask are advised to inform hospital staff upon arrival.

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust stated: “Gloucestershire, like much of the country, is experiencing a sharp increase in flu and respiratory illnesses. To protect everyone — patients, visitors, and staff — we ask that surgical masks are worn in direct assessment areas wherever possible. These measures are temporary and will be lifted as soon as it is safe to do so.”

The Trust emphasizes the importance of this guidance to help limit the spread of infections during the heightened season of respiratory illness.
