Gloucestershire Hosepipe Ban in Effect as Water Companies Urge Conservation

A hosepipe ban has been introduced in a limited area of Gloucestershire, effective from midnight on July 23. Thames Water implemented the restriction in parts of Cirencester, Fairford, and several villages along the River Churn, including Quenington, Coln St Aldwyns, Hatherop, Eastleach Turville, and Fyfield. Popular Cotswolds destinations such as Moreton-in-Marsh, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, and Tetbury are also affected. This ban covers approximately 30,000 to 40,000 residents served by Thames Water in the county and will be lifted once conditions improve.

While other water suppliers like Bristol Water, Severn Trent Water, Wessex Water, and Welsh Water currently have no plans for bans in their coverage areas, they are urging customers to adopt water-saving practices to prevent further restrictions. Bristol Water, serving much of South Gloucestershire and parts of Tetbury, reports reservoir levels remain healthy but emphasizes the importance of mindful water use during hotter months. Simple actions such as taking shorter showers, using watering cans instead of hoses, and keeping a jug of cold water on hand can significantly reduce demand.

Severn Trent Water has noted unprecedented water usage due to prolonged heat and appeals to customers to help maintain supply by using water responsibly. They highlight the difference between watering cans and sprinklers—watering cans use far less water, aiding conservation efforts. Similarly, Wessex Water stresses the importance of small behavioral changes, like reusing paddling pool water, especially during peak times when water pressure may be affected.

Welsh Water, which serves parts of western Gloucestershire, currently has no plans to enforce restrictions but continues monitoring supply levels closely.

All water companies encourage residents to conserve water thoughtfully, ensuring taps keep flowing and safety around reservoirs is maintained. By taking small steps collectively, Gloucestershire communities can help safeguard water resources amid continued dry and hot weather conditions.
