Gloucestershire Head Coach Mark Alleyne Eyes Loan Market to Bolster Bowling Lineup

Gloucestershire head coach Mark Alleyne has acknowledged the challenges facing the county’s bowling attack after numerous winter departures and revealed plans to explore the loan market to reinforce their seam bowling strength.

The county has seen key players depart, including Ajeet Singh Dale to Lancashire, Zaman Akhter to Essex, Archie Bailey to Durham, and Josh Shaw to Somerset. Additionally, Tom Price and Dom Goodman have both joined Sussex. In contrast, Gloucestershire has only brought in New Zealander Will Williams from Lancashire and welcomed back Craig Miles from Warwickshire.

Adding to the squad, Australian Gabe Bell will join for the opening six Championship matches. Alleyne concedes the seam bowling depth has diminished considerably: “Six players have moved on and we have recruited a couple. So the bowling depth isn’t quite there yet, but we feel it is important not to rush into those replacements and that we get the right ones.”

While pleased with the current squad, Alleyne is realistic about potential mid-season reinforcements: “We might have to make use of the loan system during the first half of the season and see where we are at.”

Bell, an experienced campaigner for Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield, comes highly recommended. Beau Webster, a former Gloucestershire player, praised Bell’s potential impact in English conditions. Bell took 32 wickets this season, ranking sixth in the competition. Alleyne described him as “a really strong workhorse” who “presents consistent line and length and is always challenging the batters.” Though not express pace, Bell’s accuracy and attacking nature have made him an effective wicket-taker.

Similarly, 32-year-old New Zealander Will Williams is known for his disciplined bowling. Alleyne noted, “Will is a bowler with not a lot of pace but presents a really attacking line and length and gives good control. He’s really robust with a good engine and should serve us well.”

Craig Miles, who debuted for Gloucestershire at just 16, returns full-time after several seasons at Warwickshire. Last summer, Miles briefly played on loan with Gloucestershire, helping ease his transition back. Alleyne emphasized the importance of team dynamics and consistency across the season, noting that strong spin options will help manage the seamers’ workload.

Gloucestershire’s spin department, led by coach Tom Smith since his retirement last summer, is expected to play a bigger role this season. Alleyne highlighted players like Ollie Price, Graeme van Buuren, Jack Taylor, Ed Middleton, and young spinner Alfie Johnson. Meanwhile, Miles Hammond has regained form as a spinner. Unfortunately, Ahmed Syed’s ankle injury rules him out for the first half of the season.

Regarding signing an overseas spinner, Alleyne deemed it “very unlikely” given the investment in their spin bowlers and the desire to develop homegrown talent. Instead, any additional support later in the season is more likely to come as seam bowling reinforcements through loans rather than overseas signings.
