Gloucestershire Faces Major Setback as David Payne Ruled Out for Entire T20 Blast Campaign

Gloucestershire’s challenging start to the County Championship has shifted focus to the white-ball format, but the team has encountered a significant obstacle ahead of the upcoming T20 Blast campaign. Sitting at the bottom of Division Two, with five defeats in six matches and a meager 32 points—39 points shy of safety—Gloucestershire are desperate to reclaim their standing in the shorter format where they have traditionally excelled.

After their 2024 T20 Blast triumph over Somerset, hopes were high to retain the trophy. However, Gloucestershire finished seventh in the South group, missing out on the knockout stages. This season’s format changes place them in the Central group alongside familiar rivals such as Glamorgan, Northamptonshire Steelbacks, Somerset, Warwickshire Bears, and Worcestershire Rapids. Only the top two teams and the best two third-placed sides will proceed to the quarter-finals, meaning tough competition lies ahead.

Adding to Gloucestershire’s challenges, star seam bowler David Payne, 35, will miss the entire T20 season due to an ankle injury sustained during his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. Payne, who underwent surgery and faces three months of rehabilitation, expressed regret for the timing of his absence: “The decision to have surgery was incredibly difficult and came after exhausting every possible option to return to play.”

To reinforce the squad, Gloucestershire have signed South African all-rounder Duan Jansen as a replacement for Australian Liam Scott, who was called up for international duty. Jansen, with experience in global T20 leagues and a reputation for control and consistency, will join the team for the first six Blast matches. Known for his left-arm seam bowling and powerful batting, the 26-year-old brings a valuable skill set that Director of Cricket Jon Lewis anticipates will fit well with the squad’s needs.

Dawid Malan, the former world number one batsman, also joins Gloucestershire with ambitions of propelling the team back to white-ball prominence. Malan cited his desire to be part of a passionate white-ball side as a key factor in his move, eager to contribute to a club with recent T20 success.

Despite the setbacks, Gloucestershire remain determined to compete fiercely in the Vitality Blast, leveraging their experienced squad and strategic signings to reverse fortunes in their favored format.
