Louis Kimber delivered a gritty half-century to clinch a thrilling two-wicket win for Northamptonshire against Gloucestershire on the final day of a Rothesay County Championship Division Two match at Bristol’s Seat Unique Stadium.
Brought into the side midway through the game as an injury replacement for Saif Zaid, Kimber entered the crease with Northamptonshire needing 95 runs and four wickets in hand during a fiercely contested match. Displaying calm under pressure, the 29-year-old hammered 66 runs off 69 balls, including 11 fours and a six, steering his team tantalizingly close to victory.
Australian Test batter Nathan McSweeney contributed a steady 46, while Lewis McManus remained unbeaten on 22 to guide Northamptonshire to the target of 249. Gloucestershire’s Will Williams bowled impressively, taking 2 wickets for just 5 runs from 6.2 overs, including four maidens, giving his team a fighting chance to earn only their second win of the season.

With this victory, Northamptonshire strengthened their promotion aspirations by collecting 19 points. Meanwhile, Gloucestershire, enduring their sixth defeat in seven red-ball matches this season, remain anchored at the bottom of Division Two with just three points.
Gloucestershire head coach Mark Alleyne acknowledged the team’s improved competitiveness, stating, “We’ve come a long way from early-season innings defeats. The close nature of this loss shows progress, though the five losses in six games is tough to accept. There are signs of recovery despite setbacks, such as Gabe Bell’s injury today.”
The match resumed after early morning rain delays, with Bristol’s groundstaff working to clear the outfield. Play finally began 30 minutes after an 11am inspection, with Northamptonshire at 144-5, needing 105 more runs for victory.
Gloucestershire’s injury woes deepened when seam bowler Gabe Bell was ruled out with a sore back, replaced by Luke Charlesworth making his Championship debut in 2026. Despite this, Gloucestershire struck early when Will Williams trapped nightwatchman Harry Conway lbw for five.
Kimber attacked fiercely, hitting several boundaries off the bowling of Craig Miles and Matt Taylor, shifting momentum back to Northamptonshire. Williams soon broke a key partnership by having McSweeney caught lbw, temporarily reviving hopes for Gloucestershire.
The introduction of Charlesworth failed to stem Kimber’s aggression. Kimber punished loose deliveries with boundaries and sixes, bringing the required runs down steadily. After a quickfire half-century off 44 balls, Kimber’s dismissal by van Buuren brought Gloucestershire back into contention by exposing the tail.
However, McManus held firm under pressure, securing the winning runs with a boundary off Taylor just before lunch, sealing an exciting finish for Northamptonshire.
