Gloucestershire Constabulary apologises for councillor’s experience with police

Gloucestershire councillor Victoria Halifax was left disheartened after being advised by the police to “calm down and come back another day” while she attempted to report an assault. The incident, which occurred at Shire Hall a few years ago, was brought up during a debate on policing at the Gloucestershire County Council.

During the debate, Cllr Halifax shared her belief in the dedication of the majority of police officers to their duty, despite her own negative encounter with the Gloucestershire Constabulary. Recounting her distressing experience, she expressed her disappointment with the lack of action despite multiple complaints about a known drug house in her neighborhood. This led to a physical assault on one of her children, prompting her to visit the police station and report the incident. However, instead of receiving the expected support, she was met with dismissive and patronizing remarks, leaving her feeling unheard and unsupported.

In response to the incident, a spokesperson for the Gloucestershire Constabulary expressed regret over Cllr Halifax’s experience and assured that they would be reaching out to her to gather more details about the situation. They also emphasized their commitment to investigating the matter further and taking appropriate action.
