Joe Eckland produced a calm and composed innings of 68 not out to guide Gloucestershire to a dramatic three-wicket victory over Northamptonshire Steelbacks in a nail-biting Metro Bank One Day Cup match at Cheltenham.
Chasing a daunting total of 309, Gloucestershire’s innings was anchored by strong contributions from Cameron Bancroft and James Bracey, who scored 68 and 56 respectively. With the match finely poised, Eckland forged a crucial 70-run partnership with Daz Ahmed, who made 48 off 38 balls, and later held his nerve alongside Aman Rao, steering Gloucestershire home with four balls remaining.
Earlier, Nathan McSweeney and George Bartlett powered the Steelbacks with innings of 79 and 75, respectively, helping them post 308 runs in 46.3 overs. Ahmed delivered an outstanding bowling performance with career-best List-A figures of 4 for 56.

Ahmed reflected on the victory, saying: “This was an absolutely brilliant win. For us to play two and win two at a packed Cheltenham and finish the competition in the way we did, is very satisfying.
“I wasn’t at my best with the ball early on but was pleased to take two wickets upfront. Coming back later to tidy things up was really pleasing. Nathan McSweeney and George Bartlett batted with great intent, applying pressure on us, but we managed to break their partnerships at key moments and finished strongly in the last 10 overs. We could have been chasing 360, so heading into the break with 308 was a relief.
“During the chase, I felt things were progressing well when Joe and I were together. I was frustrated not to be there at the end, but Joe held his nerve brilliantly and played a superb innings to secure the win.”
McSweeney and Miller set the foundation for Steelbacks with a 73-run stand in 13 overs, followed by Bartlett joining McSweeney for an aggressive fourth-wicket partnership. Both reached their sixth One Day Cup half-centuries of the season.
McSweeney reached his half-century in 43 balls, showcasing nine fours, while the fourth-wicket pair added 50 runs in just six overs to seize control. Ahmed made a key breakthrough, dismissing McSweeney to a leg stump delivery. Bartlett responded quickly, hitting his half-century off 39 balls, including 12 fours and two sixes, before falling to a slog-sweep in the 36th over with the score at 238 for six.
With hopes still alive of qualifying for the knockout stages, Northants pushed to improve their net run rate. However, their attacking approach led to further wickets, and contributions from Dom Leech and Liam Guthrie ensured the side surpassed 300 runs.
Gloucestershire’s openers, Bracey and Bancroft, laid a strong foundation with a 99-run partnership in 14 overs, hitting a combined 17 boundaries to give the chase early momentum. Bracey quickly reached his fifty off 37 balls before being dismissed, and Bancroft followed with a patient half-century off 58 balls.
However, Procter shifted the momentum with two wickets, including Bancroft caught at mid-off, and Joe Phillips was run out at 180 for four, bringing Northants back into the contest.
Ahmed and Eckland then crafted a vital sixth-wicket partnership that electrified the sell-out crowd. Ahmed struck five fours and two sixes before being caught, and after Middlesotn’s dismissal lbw to Leech, the match looked evenly poised.
Eckland reached his fifty in 66 balls and, with calm precision, partnered Aman Rao to secure a thrilling victory for Gloucestershire, capping off the One Day Cup campaign on a triumphant note.
