Gloucestershire head coach Mark Alleyne praised his team’s “thoroughly enjoyable” performance following a much-needed win in County Championship Division Two. After a difficult start with three heavy defeats, Gloucestershire clinched a commanding ten-wicket victory over Derbyshire at Derbyshire’s home ground on Monday.
Batting first, Gloucestershire posted a formidable total of 498, with standout contributions from Miles Hammond, who scored 145, alongside impressive innings from bowlers Will Williams (98) and Henry Brookes (89). Derbyshire were then forced to follow on after being bowled out for 281 in their first innings.
Derbyshire’s second innings totaled 252, handing Gloucestershire a modest target of 39, which they comfortably achieved without losing a wicket. The win earned Gloucestershire 21 valuable league points.

Reflecting on the outcome, Alleyne commented, “It was thoroughly enjoyable, especially from the start when we made the brave decision to bat first on a pitch favorable to bowlers. Despite a brief wobble, our lower order steadied the innings and pushed us to an imposing 498. That gave us the upper hand, and it was fantastic to see the team maintain control and secure the win.”
He continued, “Our bowlers put in a great effort. Bowlers Gabe Bell and Will Williams, in particular, managed 90 overs between them and took 11 wickets at just two runs per over, which was crucial in controlling the match during key sessions on days three and four. Their performance allowed our batsmen to recuperate and kept the pressure firmly on Derbyshire.”
With this victory, Gloucestershire rise off the bottom of Division Two, now sitting three points above Kent and just one point behind Derbyshire, though they have played one more game.
Derbyshire head of cricket Mickey Arthur acknowledged the turning point in the match, highlighting the crucial 191-run partnership between Henry Brookes and Will Williams. “That partnership really changed the game,” Arthur admitted. “It was disappointing because we bowled well in the first 80 overs, but giving a 190-run stand between numbers nine and ten was pivotal. After that, our momentum was lost, and it became a fight for survival. Our skills were good, but that’s not an excuse – we are better than that.”
