Gloucestershire Braces for Continued Flooding as River Levels Rise

Gloucestershire faces continued flooding threats as rising levels of the River Severn persist following heavy rainfall from Storm Claudia. The Environment Agency (EA) has issued multiple flood warnings for areas along the Severn in Gloucestershire, with additional alerts extending into Worcestershire.

Although the storm’s rainfall has lessened, river levels are expected to increase further, posing risks to nearby properties and roads. The EA emphasizes the dangers of floodwater, urging residents and motorists to exercise caution.

Motorists are strongly advised against attempting to drive through floodwaters. According to the EA, “Just 30cm of fast-flowing water is sufficient to move a car,” highlighting the severe risk. Residents should avoid walking, cycling, or driving through flooded areas and stay clear of low-lying roads adjacent to the rivers.

Current flood warnings include two key flood alerts in Gloucestershire. The first alerts concern the River Severn, covering areas from Tewkesbury to Gloucester. Communities such as Apperley, Maisemore, Hempstead, Minsterworth Ham, Quedgley, and Severn Ham near Tewkesbury are particularly vulnerable as waters continue to rise.

The second alert focuses on the River Avon in Worcestershire, impacting low-lying regions and roadways from Abbotts Salford to Tewkesbury, including Offenham, Evesham, Twyning, and the Eckington Road.

Authorities continue monitoring river levels closely and urge residents to stay informed and prioritize safety during this period of heightened flood risk.
