Gloucestershire Auction House Faces Backlash Over Sale of Disturbing Nazi Memorabilia

Harper Field Auctioneers in Stroud, Gloucestershire, is facing strong criticism for its upcoming “Medals and Militaria” auction, which includes nearly 90 lots featuring Nazi memorabilia. The collection comprises items such as Nazi Party pin badges, Hitler Youth insignia, armbands, a framed induction certificate, and even a handwritten note from Adolf Hitler.

The sale, scheduled for Wednesday, February 11, also offers military memorabilia from countries worldwide, including Great Britain, Belgium, Italy, and France. However, the inclusion of Nazi artifacts has sparked outrage among local residents.

In response, more than 100 people have signed an open letter demanding that Harper Field withdraw these controversial items from the auction. The letter highlights the dark historical significance of the Nazi regime and expresses deep concern over the auction house profiting from symbols tied to immense human suffering.

“We recently came together in Stroud to honor the victims of the Holocaust and other persecuted groups,” the letter states. “Selling Nazi memorabilia is an affront to their memory.” The letter also questions the auction house’s policy regarding prohibited or restricted items and calls for an end to current and future sales of Nazi and SS paraphernalia.

Despite these appeals, Harper Field Auctioneers reportedly declined to remove the Nazi-related lots but offered to meet with concerned residents. When questioned about the decision, the auction house stated, “We are neither equipped nor qualified to constantly judge these matters and have no plans to do so.”

Local resident Adam Horovitz voiced his concerns, saying, “Profiting from these painful memories is deeply troubling. At a time when hatred toward minorities is on the rise, selling these grotesque symbols risks putting them into the hands of those who may use them for harmful purposes, including cheap replicas accessible to aspiring fascists.”

Harper Field Auctioneers has been contacted for further comment regarding the controversy.
