Gloucestershire Announces Extensive Road and Path Closures Across Multiple Areas

Gloucestershire County Council has announced a series of temporary road closures, traffic orders, and public path changes affecting Gloucester, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, Stroud, the Forest of Dean, and the Cotswolds. These measures are planned to remain in place throughout October 2026, with some restrictions extending into April 2027.

Among the scheduled works, drainage repairs will close a 160-metre stretch of the U40285 road between Catalina and St Mary Magdalene Church from 5 to 9 October 2026. Pedestrian and emergency access will be maintained during this period. Should the works overrun, the closure order could remain effective for up to 18 months.

Severn Trent Water will carry out works resulting in the closure of approximately 50 metres of Milsom Street, between numbers 1 and 15, from 7 to 9 October 2026, between 8am and 4pm. Similarly, Back Lane will be closed along an 80-metre section from Jayne’s Court junction to Cockpit Cottage during the same times. Pedestrian and emergency access will be preserved in both instances.

From now until 7 December 2026, night closures of rail bridges will facilitate the removal of sign lanterns and brackets. These closures, enforced between 7.30pm and midnight on scheduled dates, will be accompanied by on-site signposting.

Other notable works include:

  • Pole testing between Little Taylors Road and Blackwells End Green affecting 1,610 metres on 16 October, from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
  • BT Openreach cable works closing sections of road near numbers 14 to 18 on 20 October and from Warwick Place to Trinity Lane on 21 October during similar hours.
  • Carriageway works spanning 620 metres from Wedderburn Bridge to White House Farm on 19 and 20 October, with no stopping, loading, or waiting allowed.
  • A new water connection project closing a 125-metre section from Meadowleaze to Willowleaze between 19 and 21 October.
  • Highway ditch clearance will shut a 2.55-kilometre stretch on 20 October.
  • A temporary restriction on stopping, waiting, loading, and unloading over 260 metres from Lazenby Court to Galileo Gardens will remain from 16 October through to 1 April 2027, ensuring public safety during construction.

Urgent drainage work on Climperwell Road to The Coach House, initially expected to last five days from 23 September, may extend for up to 18 months. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained, though pedestrian access will be suspended for safety.

Residents and commuters are advised to observe on-site advance signage and check with Gloucestershire Highways for any concerns or potential impacts by calling 08000 514 514. Bus passengers should consult their operators for real-time service updates due to possible short diversions through affected routes.

Legal challenges to these temporary orders must be made within specified timeframes referenced in the council’s public notices. Individuals impacted are encouraged to contact the Gloucestershire County Council public rights of way team with the corresponding reference numbers.

All closure details are based on the council’s official announcement dated 1 October 2026. Emergency access routes will generally remain open unless indicated otherwise at individual sites.
