Gloucestershire Airport Sale Collapses After Negotiations Break Down

The anticipated sale of Gloucestershire Airport has collapsed after months of negotiations failed to yield an agreement. Cheltenham Borough Council and Gloucester City Council had been in discussions with the preferred buyer, Horizon Aero Group, regarding the sale of the Staverton-based airport.

Council leaders expressed disappointment, stating that they could not accept Horizon Aero Group’s revised terms, which veered significantly from the original bid. Despite an agreed sale price exceeding the £25 million asking price, the deal stalled amid delays and missed deadlines, raising concerns about its viability.

Councillor Rowena Hay, leader of Cheltenham Borough Council, commented, “It is our duty to ensure we achieve the best value from the sale. After extensive due diligence, we regret that an agreement to complete the sale with Horizon Aero Group could not be reached. We understand the concern this news will cause, especially among airport employees who have dedicated considerable effort during this process. Moving forward, we are committed to ongoing engagement with staff, operators, tenants, and stakeholders to explore future options and secure a positive outcome for Gloucestershire Airport.”

Similarly, Councillor Jeremy Hilton, leader of Gloucester City Council, said, “This outcome is disappointing. Horizon’s commitment to aviation and the continued operation of aviation-related businesses promised a strong future for the site. We recognize the varying views on potential site uses, but our responsibility remains to adopt a measured, evidence-based approach that ensures the best long-term solution.”
