Gloucestershire Airport is once again on the market as local councils gear up for a renewed sale bid, hopeful this time of finding the right long-term partner. The 375-acre airport at Staverton, owned jointly by Cheltenham Borough Council and Gloucester City Council, has been a costly venture for taxpayers in recent years, costing millions to maintain.
Last year, the councils set an asking price of £25 million for the airport, hoping a new owner would bring the significant investment needed to ensure the airport’s operation and expansion. Although a preferred bidder was initially identified, the deal collapsed earlier this year due to disagreements over terms.
Now, with renewed interest from multiple parties, the councils have appointed international property advisor Savills to lead the sales process once more. After careful review, council leaders believe that transferring ownership is crucial to securing sustainable growth and development for Gloucestershire Airport.

Cheltenham Borough Council leader Rowena Hay said, “We are hopeful this renewed sale process will attract the right partner for the airport’s future, which remains our key priority. We will work with partners and stakeholders to provide updates as the new sale process progresses.”
Similarly, Gloucester City Council leader Jeremy Hilton emphasized the airport’s economic value: “Gloucestershire Airport is a vital asset for our county and region. Recent investor interest shows now is the right time to relist the airport. This phase offers an opportunity to engage with investors who share our vision for growth and continued aviation operations at Staverton.”
Despite previous setbacks, Gloucestershire Airport remains fully operational, continuing to support local businesses, employment, and regional connectivity. The councils stress the importance of securing a new owner who can bring the investment and vision necessary to ensure the airport’s long-term success.
