The reopening of the Netheridge Swing Bridge in Gloucester has been postponed, extending traffic disruptions in the area. Originally scheduled for completion today at 7pm, the critical maintenance works will now continue until June 3 due to unforeseen operational challenges.
Located in Hempsted, the Netheridge Swing Bridge has been undergoing vital repairs since May 27. The comprehensive works include removing the existing surfacing and waterproofing, followed by new asphalt installation. These repairs are being carried out around the clock to expedite completion, though the delay means larger vessels reliant on bridge openings will remain unable to navigate the Bridge 21 section of the canal until the project concludes.
Gloucestershire County Council updated the public on May 30, confirming the delay and providing revised reopening timelines: two lanes of traffic are expected to reopen Monday, June 2, during daytime hours only, ending at 7pm. The council emphasized that the work must continue 24/7 to restore full functionality as soon as possible.

To balance safety and progress, traffic management includes closing three lanes at a time while ensuring one lane remains open under temporary traffic lights. Commuters are urged to allow extra travel time due to restricted flow and ongoing roadworks.
Additionally, the bridge will remain locked and inoperative for river traffic during these repairs, impacting boat passage through this canal section. Motorists and river users alike are advised to prepare for continued delays and plan accordingly.
