The Netheridge swing bridge in Gloucester, originally scheduled for a brief closure to undergo essential maintenance, remains closed weeks past its expected reopening date. Work commenced on May 27, with the bridge initially set to reopen by 7 pm on May 31. However, unforeseen complications with the specialist materials required for the repairs have significantly delayed progress.
Gloucestershire County Council initially projected a reopening on June 3 after encountering what they termed “operational issues.” Unfortunately, there is still no confirmed completion date. Updates on the council’s Highways webpage emphasize ongoing efforts to resolve the delays but do not provide a definitive timeline. Temporary traffic lights are still in place, frustrating local commuters and residents.
The delays stem from a fault discovered in the specialist material originally supplied for the project. The council is actively working with the supplier to procure the correct materials and plans to reschedule the maintenance work with contractors once the issue is resolved.

The maintenance work includes removing the existing surfacing, waterproofing, and installing new asphalt. The project was intended to operate around the clock to minimize disruption. However, until the work concludes, larger boats needing the bridge to open cannot navigate through the Bridge 21 section of the canal.
Councillor Joe Harris, Cabinet Member for Highways at Gloucestershire County Council, acknowledged the inconvenience: “We understand how frustrating these delays are and sincerely thank residents for their patience and understanding. We remain committed to resolving the material issue and will reschedule work with our contractors as soon as possible. Further updates will be shared with the community at the earliest opportunity.”
Residents are urged to stay updated via official council channels as the situation develops.
