Gloucester’s Hempsted Bridge Repairs Delayed Until Mid-July Amid Resident Frustration

Hempsted Bridge, a crucial pedestrian crossing in Gloucester, will not reopen until August following extensive safety concerns and repair delays. The bridge, spanning the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, was abruptly closed by Gloucestershire Highways on April 22 after an inspection identified serious surface issues.

Local residents had been advocating for the bridge’s resurfacing for over three years, describing its condition as “absolutely disgusting.” Despite their persistent efforts, action was only taken after the Hempsted Residents Association attracted media attention, prompting the Canal and River Trust to finally secure funding and plan the necessary repair works.

The Trust, which owns the bridge, plans to begin repairs in mid-July, pending delivery of specialist materials required to replace the existing surface and timber deck. While boats will continue to navigate beneath, the bridge itself will remain inaccessible during the estimated three-week repair period.

Dibs Bucknell, a local resident, expressed intense disappointment at the prolonged inaction. “We have sent countless emails over three years with no results. It was only after involving the media that they closed the bridge, seemingly as a kneejerk reaction. We have suggested installing a temporary steel plate for partial access and have reached out to our MP for further support.”

Newly elected County Councillor Rebecca Trimnell (LD, Hempsted and Westgate) welcomed the repair announcement, acknowledging the bridge’s importance. “Many residents have missed this route, especially schoolchildren. Its reopening can’t come soon enough.”

A Canal and River Trust spokesperson apologized for the disruption, stating: “Following the closure by the County Council due to safety concerns, we will start repairs in mid-July after securing funding and receiving the necessary materials. The current surface and timber deck will be replaced, followed by installation of a new anti-slip surface by expert contractors.”

Gloucestershire County Council echoed the Trust’s message and urged residents to respect the closure for their safety. “The bridge will remain closed until the repairs are complete, likely after July. We apologize for the inconvenience but prioritize pedestrian safety.”

A signed diversion route will be in place throughout the works. Further details are available on the Canal and River Trust’s website.
