Gloucester’s Former Subway Transforms Into Late-Night Wine Shop

A once-empty storefront on Gloucester’s bustling Southgate Street has found new life with the arrival of Southgate Wine Stores. The premises, which stood vacant since the closure of a Subway sandwich shop in November 2024, is now set to operate as a convenience store specializing in alcohol sales.

Following Gloucester City Council approval in May to change the building’s use from a food takeaway to a convenience store, the new business applied for a premises licence to sell alcohol. The application, submitted by Amanpreet Singh, has opened a public consultation period inviting comments until July 29.

Southgate Wine Stores’ Google profile currently lists extended opening hours until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays, with earlier closing times during the rest of the week—11:30pm on most days and 10pm on Sundays. The licence application allows for sales during these late hours, although actual operation times may vary once approved.

The former Subway location, situated next to Tesco Express, underwent several changes during planning approval. To respect the area’s conservation status and the listed building, signage plans were adjusted. The original bold text was centralized and reduced, while the proposed hanging sign shifted from a printed foam panel to a hand-painted wooden board, blending more fittingly with the surroundings.

Initially, the store considered the name ‘Southgate Value Booze’ but opted for ‘Southgate Wine Stores’ instead. Recent photos on Google reveal a diverse selection of products, ranging from Frosty Jacks cider to Moët champagne, as well as spirits, sweets, vapes, and ready-to-eat foods.

This transition marks a notable shift for the location, giving Gloucester residents access to a late-night wine and convenience shop in a central spot where a popular sandwich chain once stood.
