Gloucester’s Dr Foster: A Waterfront Gem in a Historic Warehouse

There’s something irresistible about sipping a drink by the waterfront on a sunny day, and in Gloucester, Dr Foster perfectly captures that experience. Nestled inside the striking red brick Kimberley Warehouse at Gloucester Docks, this pub has rapidly become one of the county’s most beloved spots.

Though Dr Foster only reopened in July 2024 following a comprehensive refurbishment, it has already made a significant impact. For the second year running, it has been shortlisted among the top three pubs in Gloucestershire at the prestigious National Pub and Bar Awards — a testament to its quality and appeal.

Visiting on a mild, occasionally rainy Wednesday afternoon, I found the pub quieter than expected, but it was easy to imagine it bustling on warmer, drier days. While outdoor seating along the waterfront beckons when the sun shines, I opted for the indoor spaces, particularly the bright conservatory. With floor-to-ceiling windows, this area offers the best of both worlds: protected from the weather yet fully embracing the dockside views.

Dr Foster boasts a thoughtfully curated drink menu highlighting local brews like Deya Brewery’s Steady Rolling Man lager (£7.20 a pint) and Dunkertons craft cider (£6.80 a pint). This focus on Gloucestershire’s finest reflects the pub’s dedication to celebrating the region.

The ambiance strikes a perfect balance between gastro-pub sophistication and approachable comfort. The all-day brunch menu features crowd-pleasers like avocado toast (£10.20), buttermilk pancakes (£11), and a hearty full fry-up (£15). Family-friendly touches abound too, including a selection of board games and cozy sofa-bench seating surrounded by framed artwork and lush plants — creating a warm, inviting environment that welcomes all guests.

Service at Dr Foster is genuinely friendly and attentive. Though I didn’t sample the food on this visit, the bar staff’s welcoming smiles and detailed knowledge of their local and guest drinks enhanced the overall experience.

In short, Dr Foster is a welcoming, stylish pub perfectly situated in the heart of Gloucester Docks. Its consistent accolades and warm atmosphere make it a standout choice, whether you’re stopping by for a casual drink or a leisurely meal. I’m already looking forward to returning, hopefully to enjoy the waterfront seating alongside some delicious food next time.
