Gloucester’s Conservative leadership to be evaluated based on city accomplishments, praises MP Richard Graham for endorsing wage hikes and tax reductions

The Conservative leaders in Gloucester will be assessed based on their achievements in the city, stated MP Richard Graham, as he lauded the news that individuals will see substantial increases in their income due to tax cuts and a rise in the minimum wage.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt presented the contents of the Autumn Statement in the House of Commons, outlining the government’s tax and spending plans for the upcoming year.

In response to the announcement, Mr. Graham estimated that the minimum wage increase would help lift approximately 1.7 million people out of relative poverty. He emphasized that the measures announced will offer significant benefits for everyone in the city, particularly in stimulating economic growth.

“For most workers, the reduction in national insurance will result in an increase in take-home pay worth at least £150, and for many, it will be £450," he said. “That’s the reduction from 12 to ten per cent. That’s a substantial increase."

He also highlighted the positive impact of extended business rate exemptions and the abolition of class two national insurance for the self-employed, along with reduced class four contributions.

Additionally, measures to expedite the processing of planning applications will provide reassurance to many individuals and businesses, ensuring timely planning or a refund. The incentives for research and development, as well as capital allowances, were noted to benefit various industries in the region.

Mr. Graham acknowledged his party’s diminishing popularity in the polls but emphasized that in Gloucester, they will ultimately be judged on the accomplishments in redeveloping the city and addressing challenges such as the sudden closure of GL1 and Oxstalls Sports Park. He stressed the significance of the city’s progress, including the establishment of the first-ever city-center university campus, the first-ever four-star hotel, infrastructure improvements, and recent funding allocation for Eastgate Market.

In contrast, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Gloucester, Alex McIntyre, criticized the Conservative government, stating that working people in the city are worse off after 13 years of economic failure. He highlighted rising prices, increased energy bills, and higher mortgage payments, proposing Labour’s plan to alleviate financial burdens for families in Gloucester.

Ultimately, the voters in Gloucester will evaluate the city’s progress and make informed political decisions based on the ongoing developments.
