Gloucester Welcomes New Late-Night Wine Shop After Subway Closure

A long-vacant shopfront on Gloucester’s bustling Southgate Street is coming back to life following the closure of the Subway sandwich shop in November 2024. The site, positioned next to Tesco Express, has been repurposed as Southgate Wines Stores after receiving Gloucester City Council’s approval in May to change its use from a food takeaway to a convenience store.

The business, operated by Amanpreet Singh, has submitted an application for a new premises licence to sell alcohol, as stated in a public notice featured in the Gloucester Citizen and on the Public Notice Portal. The public can submit their comments and objections until July 29.

According to the store’s Google profile, Southgate Wines Stores proposes extended operating hours, staying open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays, with earlier closing times on other days—11:30pm on weekdays and 10pm on Sundays. While these hours demonstrate the store’s potential flexibility, actual opening times may vary pending the approval of the licence. Interested parties can review the licence application by appointment at Gloucester City Council by emailing [email protected] or calling 01452 396396.

During the planning process, council officers noted the shop was previously a sandwich and hot food takeaway, which had been vacant since November 2024. The building features a residential flat on its third floor. Adjustments were made to signage plans after consultation with the Conservation Officer to suit the historic character of the area and the listed building status. The signage was redesigned from large printed panels to more understated painted boards with hand-written lettering, ensuring visual harmony with the conservation area’s aesthetic.

Initially, the shop was to be named ‘Southgate Value Booze,’ but the final signage now reads ‘Southgate Wines Stores.’ Recent Google images showcase an extensive selection of products, ranging from Frosty Jacks cider and Moët champagne to spirits, sweets, vapes, and snacks—offering local residents a convenient new option for late-night purchases.
