A once-empty shopfront on Gloucester’s bustling Southgate Street has been transformed following the closure of the Subway branch in November 2024. The premises, located next to Tesco Express, is now home to Southgate Wines Stores.
After receiving Gloucester City Council’s approval in May to change the building’s use from a food takeaway to a convenience store, the new business is seeking a premises licence to sell alcohol. The application, submitted by Amanpreet Singh, has opened a public consultation inviting comments until July 29.
According to the Google profile for Southgate Wines Stores, the shop is set to operate late hours—remaining open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays, with closing times at 11:30pm on weekdays and 10pm on Sundays. The premises licence application proposes flexible alcohol sale hours to accommodate these extended opening times, though actual hours will depend on council approval.

For those interested, the licence application is available for viewing by appointment at Gloucester City Council offices, which can be arranged via email or phone.
The council’s planning decision highlighted that the building’s previous use was a sandwich shop and hot food takeaway, which had been vacant for several months. Notably, the third floor remains a residential flat. During the application process, proposed signage underwent revisions to satisfy the Conservation Officer’s concerns, opting for a more traditional and visually harmonious design appropriate for the historic conservation area and listed building.
Originally intended to be branded “Southgate Value Booze,” the shop signage now reads “Southgate Wines Stores.” Recent images on Google showcase a diverse selection of products, including everything from Frosty Jacks cider and Moët champagne to spirits, sweets, vapes, and food items, signaling a comprehensive offering for customers visiting this new late-night venue in Gloucester.
