Gloucester Services on the M5 has emerged as one of the most highly rated motorway service areas in the United Kingdom. Operated by the Westmorland Family at the farm shop located between junctions 11A and 12, the site boasts an impressive 4.45-star average from 41,924 Google reviews combined across its northbound and southbound locations. This volume of feedback exceeds that of any other service area nationally.
The facility also secured the top spot in the recent Which? survey focused on motorway services, underscoring its popularity among travellers.
These rankings were compiled by Ski Famille, a specialist in family holidays, which analysed Google ratings for 97 motorway service areas across the UK earlier this month, ahead of the busy October half-term travel period. The ranking methodology involved calculating an average score derived from full star breakdowns, combining ratings for both sides of the motorway where these are separately listed on Google.

Only Rotherham services on the M1 and Rugby services on the M6 surpassed Gloucester’s ratings. Local facilities further highlight a mixed picture: Moto’s Severn View services on the M48 in South Gloucestershire is among the lowest rated in the UK, with a 3.60-star average, while Bridgwater services, positioned further down the M5, holds the lowest rating nationally at 3.05 stars.
Alex Dyer, managing director of Ski Famille, commented: “For families embarking on long half-term journeys, stopping at a quality service station can make all the difference. Choosing where to stop, rather than pulling in solely when fuel runs low, can improve the experience significantly.
“Clean toilets and facilities for children to stretch their legs are priorities for parents, often valued more than large food courts. The top-rated service areas successfully meet these expectations.”
A spokesperson for Moto responded by emphasising their commitment to excellent customer experiences across their sites. “We continuously listen to feedback to identify areas for improvement. While Google reviews provide one insight, broader independent research paints a more positive overall picture. For example, the Transport Focus Motorway Services User Survey reports that 94% of respondents were satisfied or fairly satisfied with Moto services.
“We take all customer comments seriously and remain dedicated to investing in our facilities and supporting our teams to ensure motorists enjoy the best possible experience when stopping with us.”
The rankings exclude service areas with fewer than 500 Google reviews or those where the primary building is currently closed. Where service areas share the same star rating, the precise average was used to determine order.
