Gloucester Samaritans Seek Compassionate Listeners to Support Local Community

Are you a patient, empathetic listener? Gloucester and District Samaritans are inviting volunteers to join their team of listening volunteers, providing an essential lifeline to individuals in distress.

As a listening volunteer, your role is to offer a non-judgmental, understanding ear to people reaching out for help. By simply listening and supporting, you can help change lives and bring hope to those going through difficult times.

Volunteering requires a commitment of just a few hours per week, but the impact you make is profound. You’ll receive thorough and professional training that equips you to handle a wide range of conversations with callers from every walk of life.

Many volunteers find this role deeply rewarding. It’s a privilege to be trusted by someone in crisis or simply needing to be heard. Beyond helping others, you’ll develop valuable skills such as effective communication, empathy, and confidence—tools that benefit both your personal and professional life.

One recent volunteer shared, “While people might expect this role to be emotionally challenging, my experience has been incredibly fulfilling thanks to excellent training and the strong support network at Gloucester Samaritans.”

The atmosphere within the branch is friendly and supportive, and you’re never alone during shifts. You can choose to provide support over the phone or by email, with flexibility to take breaks whenever needed.

Samaritans welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds. No prior experience or qualifications are necessary—what matters most is your willingness to help others with compassion and without judgment. Whether you’ve faced hardships yourself or not, your commitment to supporting all kinds of people is key.

Volunteers must be 18 or older and prepared for a long-term commitment, as training is an investment both you and Samaritans make together. Due to confidentiality policies, serving police officers and special constables cannot volunteer as listeners but may contribute in other roles.

A criminal record check is required to safeguard everyone involved; having a record does not automatically exclude you, as each case is reviewed individually.

Samaritans operates 24/7 with the help of dedicated volunteers. Listening shifts usually last 3–4 hours weekly, including at least one night shift every six weeks. Night shifts are often when callers need support most, and travel expenses are reimbursed for your safety.
