Gloucester Rugby’s Ross Byrne Poised for Early Departure After Challenging Season

Ross Byrne, the Irish fly-half with 22 international caps, finds himself on the brink of leaving Gloucester Rugby earlier than planned. After a disappointing first season at Kingsholm, the 31-year-old has been given permission to explore new opportunities.

Byrne, who joined Gloucester from Leinster in the summer of 2025 on a lucrative three-year deal reportedly worth around £370,000 annually, has struggled to secure his place in the team. Despite being fully fit and the club’s highest-paid player, Byrne has not appeared for Gloucester since February, when he last featured in a Premiership Rugby Cup win against Sale Sharks. Instead, young talent Charlie Atkinson has claimed the coveted number 10 jersey throughout the season.

The former Ireland player, a member of the 2023 Grand Slam-winning squad and a five-time United Rugby Championship winner, has seen his career stall in England. Gloucester head coach George Skivington, who initially recruited Byrne, admitted the move has not met expectations. “Being frank, it’s not gone the way we saw it going initially,” Skivington said. “But with Charlie in a better position than anticipated, Ross remains professional, training hard and keeping a positive attitude. There’s no drama.”

Interest in Byrne has intensified from French Top 14 side Perpignan, who are seeking to bolster their playmaking options after the retirements and departures of Benjamín Urdapilleta and Tommaso Allan. The club recently missed out on Australian talent Tom Lynagh, who chose to remain with the Queensland Reds, turning their attention toward Byrne as a seasoned alternative.

Notably, Perpignan have already signed Irish scrum-half Luke McGrath from Leinster, setting the stage for a reunion between Byrne and his former provincial half-back partner should the move materialize.

Byrne had also been linked with a move to the Sharks in Durban, but Gloucester seems eager to release him to better manage their budget. However, any early contract termination is expected to involve some form of compensation to Byrne.
