Gloucester Rugby is firmly focused on capturing the PREM Rugby Cup after a crucial 16-8 victory over Bristol Bears at a rain-soaked Ashton Gate on Sunday. This win solidifies the Cherry and Whites’ position atop Pool A, with three group stage matches still to come.
Despite earlier exits from the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup, Gloucester’s ambitions remain high. Forwards coach Trevor Woodman expressed the team’s determination: “We are out of other competitions, so the PREM Cup is now our target. We still face a tough run with two away games and one home match left, but ultimately, we want to win this cup.”
Woodman also highlighted the challenge of a disrupted season plagued by injuries. “We’ve had many players sidelined, which affected our rhythm. Now, with key players returning, it’s vital to reconnect and regain our combinations to play our best rugby.”

The match itself was a defensive battle. Bristol took an 8-7 lead into halftime thanks to a converted try by Mikey Austin. Gloucester responded with a try from Rich Lane and penalties from Sam Worsley and full-back George Barton—who added three second-half penalties to seal the win.
Woodman praised his squad’s resilience amid difficult conditions. “The players really fronted up defensively, especially in our 22. We adjusted by bringing on Ross Byrne early in the second half to enhance our kicking game and field position,” he explained.
Reflecting on their recent narrow loss to Bath, Woodman noted a positive development in game management. “Last week, the team learned how to handle tight finishes. Today, they applied those lessons well and secured the victory.”
Gloucester will have a bye this weekend before traveling to face Exeter Chiefs away on February 14 in the PREM Rugby Cup.
