Gloucester Rugby have moved decisively to bolster their squad by securing the return of former England and club scrum-half Dan Robson. The 33-year-old has signed a two-year contract to rejoin the Cherry and Whites at Kingsholm, providing vital cover following the anticipated departure of Tomos Williams.
Williams, who joined Gloucester from Cardiff Rugby last season, is expected to join Saracens ahead of the 2026/27 season. His exit marks a significant loss for Gloucester, who had named him club captain this summer. Williams impressed throughout the 2024/25 Premiership season, earning the Player of the Season award and gaining selection for the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia before injury cut his tour short.
Robson, capped 14 times by England under Eddie Jones, brings extensive experience gained during four seasons in France with Pau following Wasps’ financial collapse in 2022. Originally a product of Gloucester’s academy, Robson made 80 appearances for the club between 2010 and 2015 before departing for Wasps.

Gloucester remain confident in the potential of 26-year-old scrum-half Caolan Englefield, who recently represented England A but is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury. With Williams declining a new contract and the need for depth at number nine growing, Gloucester also explored options such as Ospreys’ Kieran Hardy amid uncertainty surrounding Welsh regional rugby.
Capitalizing on instability in Welsh rugby, Gloucester have earned a reputation as a haven for Welsh talent, often dubbed “The fifth region.” Alongside Williams, players like Max Llewellyn, Josh Hathaway, and Freddie Thomas have already made Kingsholm their home. Recently, Gloucester also secured signings for Wales’ backrow captain Jac Morgan and hooker Dewi Lake, further strengthening the squad ahead of the next season.
