Gloucester Rugby clinched their place in next season’s Champions Cup with a commanding 54-21 victory over Newcastle Falcons at Kingsholm. The standout performer was full-back Ben Redshaw, who scored a magnificent hat-trick, helping his team secure a crucial bonus-point win.
The result ensured Gloucester finished eighth in the Premiership table, edging out Harlequins to claim the final European qualification spot. Despite a sluggish start that saw them trail 14-7 after the first quarter, Gloucester unleashed an 11-minute blitz with four tries, turning the tide decisively as Newcastle’s resistance faltered.
In addition to Redshaw’s trio, tries were scored by Arthur Clark, Caolan Englefield, Max Llewellyn, James Venter, and Seb Blake, with Charlie Atkinson successfully converting seven times. Newcastle’s tries came from George McGuigan, Tom Christie, and Simon Benitez Cruz, with two conversions from Brett Connon and one from Ben Healy.

Coach George Skivington praised Redshaw’s progress, noting: “Ben was excellent today and has developed well over the last three games after missing most of the season with injury. He has a long way to go but is an exceptional talent with great potential.”
While acknowledging his team wasn’t at their best, Skivington highlighted the importance of finishing the season strongly. “Winning our last three home games was the target, and we’ve achieved that. Today’s victory was essential to ensure we face the top teams, but we will properly evaluate the Champions Cup challenge when next season begins.”
He added that the early stages of the match felt “edgy,” influenced by recent player departures, but praised Newcastle for their stubbornness in set-pieces. “If our line-out had been sharper, we might have closed the game earlier, but getting the job done was what mattered.”
This fixture marked Stephen Jones’ final game as Newcastle coach. Despite a challenging season with only two wins from 18 league games, Jones commended his squad’s unity and resilience. “We have 26 players leaving, but they remained a tight, honest group. We scored some wonderful tries today, though a lapse in that 11-minute spell cost us.”
Jones expressed optimism about the future. “We showed great spirit in the second half; some players had to dig deep, running on empty. It’s crucial we keep hold of emerging talents like Ben Redshaw, who we unfortunately lost before. Fans should look forward to next season, as a fresh group is coming in. It will take time to gel, but the rewards will come.”
