Gloucester Rugby is showing renewed energy and determination as they edge closer to securing a spot in next season’s Champions Cup. After a hard-fought 21-15 victory over Sale at Kingsholm, the squad is focused on maximizing their performance in the final three Gallagher Premiership matches.
With a top-eight finish guaranteeing Champions Cup qualification, Gloucester and Harlequins are locked in a tight battle for the last place. Currently, Gloucester holds a comfortable nine-point lead over Quins as they prepare to face Saracens, Northampton, and Newcastle to close out their season.
Gloucester’s Director of Rugby, George Skivington, spoke to TNT Sports about the team’s mindset: “The season hasn’t been ideal, but the encouraging part is how everyone has pulled together when needed. There’s a strong energy around the club. We still have three games left and want to give it our all.”

Skivington reflected on the challenges the team faced earlier in the season. “Tough times reveal character. You find out who shows up when it’s hard, and that builds your reputation. You have to dig deep and show up for every game, win or lose, because it won’t be forgotten.”
Following their recent win over playoff hopefuls Exeter, Gloucester showed resilience by overturning a 12-point deficit against Sale. Key tries from wing Ben Loader and fly-half Charlie Atkinson, alongside accurate conversions from full-back George Barton, turned the match around. Atkinson’s late try sealed the victory, while Barton maintained a flawless kicking record.
Sale initially led thanks to tries from hooker Alfie Longstaff and wing Tom O’Flaherty and a conversion by George Ford. Despite their early dominance in scoring, Sale struggled with set pieces and the breakdown, losing vital lineouts and failing to establish territory. Ford’s 74th-minute drop goal kept the game intense until Gloucester’s late surge.
Sale’s Rugby Director, Alex Sanderson, acknowledged the team’s performance issues: “We started with good effort and motivation, but we lacked a solid platform. Losing lineouts and scrum difficulties hurt us, especially given the youth in those positions. The breakdown was a mess, and we need to improve.”
With three crucial games left, Gloucester is determined to sustain their momentum and secure Champions Cup qualification by maintaining their high intensity and commitment on the field.
