Gloucester Rugby Prove Their Intent in Crucial Exeter Chiefs Victory

Gloucester Rugby director George Skivington expressed his delight at the determination his team showed in their impressive 34-31 triumph over Exeter Chiefs. This much-needed victory at Kingsholm ended a tough week following a heavy defeat by Bristol Bears and put a dent in Exeter’s play-off aspirations.

Defying league expectations, Gloucester secured a bonus-point win thanks to try doubles from Max Llewellyn and Will Trenholm, alongside a try from Tomos Williams. George Barton contributed with three conversions and a penalty to seal the result.

Despite Exeter’s strong attacking efforts, with tries from Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, Ross Vintcent, Greg Fisilau, and Henry Slade, plus Slade’s conversions and a penalty try, they were ultimately outmatched. Exeter still clings to fourth place but now faces increased pressure from the chasing pack.

Skivington emphasized that the key to Gloucester’s success was pure intent rather than complex tactics. “The boys wanted to put it out there today. It was more about intent than anything tactical,” he explained. “We set the markers out at the start of the week – it was not a tactical or technical week – it was about how much you care.”

He added, “That is the team we know we are, the Gloucester team we would like to put on the pitch all year, but haven’t. It was important we did that today.”

Skivington also praised captain Tomos Williams, lauding his dynamic leadership and game-changing abilities. “He is a world-class player. If you want to play attacking rugby, Tommy’s your man,” Skivington said. “Everyone feeds off that, and he can find little holes even if there is a stagnant moment or your plays go wrong. Tommy is the sort of bloke who can find that hole and make something happen.”
