Gloucester Rugby faces a challenging encounter against Saracens on Saturday at StoneX Stadium, with significant injury updates impacting the squad. Head coach George Skivington has confirmed that former captain Lewis Ludlow is out for the remainder of the season following wrist surgery. Ludlow has endured this injury for months, often wearing a cast off the pitch, but the recent operation aims to ensure his full recovery ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
“Luds has had surgery. He’s been battling this for about five years, but the last few weeks were especially painful. Although it was against his will, he needed to have the operation,” Skivington said. “He’s been managing the pain and missing some training, but with a fit back row available, it was best to get him healthy and ready for next season.”
With Ludlow sidelined, James Venter is expected to continue at openside flanker for the upcoming fixture. Gloucester looks to secure a third straight victory to disrupt Saracens’ ambitions for the playoffs.

Another concern is club captain Tomos Williams, who may miss the trip to London due to shoulder discomfort. Williams, who is set to join Saracens next season, recently returned from a shoulder injury but reported soreness after Gloucester’s 21-15 win over Sale Sharks. His absence could open the door for scrum-half Caolan Englefield to start, providing valuable game time for the young talent.
“Tomos reported his shoulder feeling sore again, similar to before. It doesn’t seem severe, but he needs proper recovery,” Skivington explained. “While it’s unfortunate to miss him, it’s a chance for Caolan and Mikey Austin to step up as Tommy won’t be with us next year.”
On a positive note, winger Ollie Thorley returns to contention after missing the Sale match due to illness. Thorley’s comeback is crucial as Gloucester aims to solidify their position in eighth place in the Premiership standings. Meanwhile, Harlequins remain competitive for the final playoff spot following an emphatic 76-17 win over Newcastle.
“Ollie was only sick for a bit this week, so we rested him against Sale, but he’s ready to be involved now,” Skivington added.
Gloucester will need to manage these injury challenges carefully as they seek to maintain momentum and push Saracens’ playoff hopes.
