Gloucester Rugby’s struggles in the Gallagher Premiership continued on Saturday as they fell 30-21 to Saracens at Kingsholm, marking their eighth defeat in nine league matches this season. Despite promising moments — including two first-half tries from locks Freddie Thomas and Arthur Clark and a late score from Will Knight — Gloucester were unable to secure victory.
Fly-half Ross Byrne converted all three tries but the Cherry and Whites remain ninth in the table, trailing significantly behind the play-off contenders. With the league at its halfway point, Gloucester faces an uphill battle to break into the top eight and secure qualification for next season’s Champions Cup.
Director of Rugby George Skivington acknowledged the team’s shortcomings: “We are creating pressure and line-break opportunities but not finishing them off. It shows we still lack the experience to cross the line. However, the lads fought hard throughout, never giving up and striving for that losing bonus-point.”

Saracens’ flanker Theo McFarland was instrumental, scoring two of their four tries, while hooker Theo Dan and scrum-half Ivan van Zyl also crossed the line. Fly-half Owen Farrell contributed with two penalties and two conversions, helping Saracens stay firmly in the play-off race.
The visitors started strong, pressing Gloucester’s defense early. Shortly in, Dan powered over for a close-range try converted by Farrell. Gloucester battled back, equalizing when Thomas touched down following a quick penalty by captain Tomos Williams, with Byrne adding the extras.
Saracens responded effectively, with McFarland scoring before Farrell extended their lead with a penalty. Gloucester narrowed the margin again before halftime thanks to Clark’s try set up by Williams, with Byrne’s conversion making the score 17-14 at the break.
Six minutes into the second half, McFarland scored again, leaping high to finish a precise kick from Farrell. Gloucester captain Williams was injured in the process but returned after treatment. Saracens pushed further ahead when replacement hooker Jamie George’s deft pass sent Van Zyl over for a try.
As the match progressed, Saracens controlled the tempo, while Gloucester’s attacking efforts dwindled. Farrell’s penalty 11 minutes from time sealed Saracens’ advantage, leaving Gloucester unable to bridge the gap.
