Northampton Saints secured a dramatic 36-32 victory over Gloucester Rugby thanks to a late try from George Furbank in the 79th minute, sealing their place in the play-off semi-finals on home turf. Despite battling back with determination and skill, Gloucester were left to rue missed opportunities in a match full of intensity and momentum swings.
The Saints, often plagued by errors throughout the match, produced a resilient display as tries from George Hendy, Rory Hutchinson, Tommy Freeman, Sam Graham, Furbank, and Fin Smith kept them in contention. Smith contributed three crucial conversions to bolster the scoreline.
Gloucester’s five-try effort came from Deian Gwynne, Ollie Thorley, Seb Atkinson, Max Llewellyn, and Ben Loader. Charlie Atkinson converted two of those tries and added a penalty, providing vital points for the visitors.

Early on, Northampton struggled with discipline, conceding five penalties within the first five minutes, and the team was forced to play with 14 men briefly after prop Emmanuel Iyogun received a yellow card for persistent infringements. Gloucester seized the momentum immediately, with Gwynne powering over from a close-range lineout and Thorley extending the lead with a slick finishing move before Iyogun’s return. The Saints were unsettled, frequently losing lineouts and possession, leaving Gloucester with a commanding 12-0 advantage after the opening quarter.
Northampton’s fightback began when Hendy capitalized on a ruck turnover to score from 30 metres out. The hosts then produced a remarkable try, launching a counterattack from their 22 with Furbank sprinting forward before setting up an easy finish for Smith. Gloucester responded quickly as Caolan Englefield broke through and set up captain Seb Atkinson for a try. Hutchinson marked his 200th appearance with a try of his own, pushing the score to a deadlock at 19-19 by halftime after a missed conversion from Smith.
The second half continued in erratic fashion. Loader’s try in the corner gave Gloucester a bonus point, but Northampton’s Freeman struck back with his 16th try of the league season. The momentum swung again when Freeman’s knock-on led to a Gloucester defensive breakdown, allowing Llewellyn to take full advantage and score. Additional tries from replacement Sam Graham and a Gloucester penalty from Atkinson set the stage for a nail-biting finish, but Furbank’s late try ultimately gave Northampton the victory.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, Gloucester’s performance offered plenty of positives and gave their supporters hope for the matches ahead.
