Gloucester Rugby edged closer to securing Champions Cup qualification for next season with a hard-fought 21-15 victory over Gallagher Premiership rivals Sale Sharks at Kingsholm Stadium.
With a top-eight finish guaranteeing a spot in next season’s European competition, Gloucester and Harlequins are locked in a fierce battle for the final qualification place. Building on their recent triumph against playoff contenders Exeter, George Skivington’s squad showcased resilience and determination to overturn a 12-0 deficit.
Early tries from Sale’s hooker Alfie Longstaff and wing Tom O’Flaherty, supplemented by a conversion from fly-half George Ford, gave the Sharks a commanding lead. England head coach Steve Borthwick watched on as Sale capitalized on slick teamwork, with a particularly impressive scoring pass from Tom Roebuck to Longstaff in the eighth minute.

Gloucester struggled to establish their rhythm in the opening half, compounded by errors such as a knocked-on ball from lock Mattias Alemanno close to the Sale try line. Despite these setbacks, wing Ben Loader powered over just before halftime, with full-back George Barton converting to narrow the margin to 12-7.
The hosts faced another challenge early in the second half when captain and Wales scrum-half Tomos Williams had to leave the field due to injury. However, Gloucester responded decisively, applying sustained pressure inside Sale’s 22. Fly-half Charlie Atkinson’s opportunistic try, followed by Barton’s accurate conversion, put Gloucester in front for the first time.
Sale fought back valiantly, with Ford adding a 74th-minute drop goal to keep the outcome in doubt. Yet Gloucester’s defense held firm, and Atkinson’s second try just three minutes from full time sealed the victory, with Barton maintaining a perfect kicking record.
This victory marks a pivotal moment in Gloucester’s campaign, boosting their hopes of securing Champions Cup rugby next season despite an intense and competitive contest.
