Gloucester Rugby saw two debutants shine impressively on Saturday, despite their team narrowly losing 43-40 to Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate in the Round One fixture of the 2026/27 PREM Rugby Cup.
New signing Phil Cokanasiga and academy star Junior Denny delivered standout performances that belied the final scoreline. Cokanasiga, who recently joined Gloucester from the Ospreys, scored two tries and assisted two others in a sensational display before being substituted in the 63rd minute due to a head injury.
While Gloucester’s summer recruitment attracted attention with high-profile signings such as Jac Morgan, Dewi Lake, and World Cup-winning lock Jean Kleyn, Cokanasiga’s arrival initially drew less spotlight. However, his impactful debut quickly shifted the narrative.

Wearing the number 13 jersey and capable of playing across both midfield positions, Cokanasiga began Gloucester’s scoring by taking a long, sweeping pass from Charlie Atkinson. Skillfully evading Jimmy Williams, he then drew defenders perfectly to create space for Dan Robson to touch down. Further slick passing saw Cokanasiga release full-back Ben Redshaw to score.
Cokanasiga’s own tries showcased his offensive prowess. His first was an interception of a Fitz Harding pass, which he converted into a 53-metre solo touchdown. His second highlighted his agility and teamwork, combining with Ollie Thorley before stepping past Bears' full-back Noah Heward en route to the try line.
With seasoned internationals such as England’s Seb Atkinson, Wales' Max Llewellyn, and England’s Will Joseph set to return, midfield competition will be fierce, but Cokanasiga demonstrated he is a strong contender.
Head coach Steve Skivington described Cokanasiga’s performance as “phenomenal”, emphasising the quality he brought to the team.
In the closing stages, attention turned to Junior Denny, the 18-year-old academy winger who made a striking entrance off the bench. Denny powered over for a try following a well-executed short pass and nearly secured a late bonus point with a determined run into the Bears' 22 during the final moments. However, he was ultimately dispossessed as Bristol secured possession to end the match.
Reflecting on Denny’s debut, Skivington praised the young player as “a real one for the future” who impressed with his humility and work ethic. He added, “We’ve had him marked as a star for some time. He’s very exciting. Today we saw a glimpse of his potential, and hopefully, we can nurture his development to where he belongs.”
Despite Gloucester’s spirited performance, defensive frailties persisted, with the Bears crossing the line seven times. Bristol’s tries came from Harry Thacker (two), Paddy Pearce, Jimmy Halliwell, Gabriel Ibitoye, Noah Heward, and James Williams, securing them a rewarding bonus point victory.
Gloucester earned two bonus points from the defeat and now prepare to host Sale Sharks at Kingsholm this coming Saturday.
