Gloucester Rugby has announced that Hugh Bokenham will leave the club at the end of the 2025/26 season to rejoin the Cornish Pirates in the Championship. The versatile forward, capable of playing both number eight and second row, initially joined Gloucester ahead of the current campaign and has made eight senior appearances this season.
During the season, Bokenham also spent time on loan at Worcester Warriors, where he is set to start this weekend’s match. At 24 years old, he will return to Cornwall to continue his professional career, rejoining the Pirates where he previously made a strong impact.
Bokenham’s departure coincides with Gloucester Rugby securing new lock signings ahead of the 2026/27 season, including Joe Joyce from Connacht and Jean Kleyn from Munster. Additionally, back-row player Jac Morgan is transferring from Ospreys to Kingsholm, increasing competition in Bokenham’s position.

The Australian-born forward initially joined the Cornish Pirates in September 2023, making 42 appearances before moving to the Gallagher Premiership. Cornish Pirates joint head coach Alan Paver praised Bokenham, highlighting his impressive set-piece skills, development as a line-out caller, and his positive influence both on and off the field.
“We’re thrilled to welcome back a standout performer and strong leader,” said Paver. “Hugh’s talent is evident, and he formed great friendships during his first spell. We look forward to seeing him at The Mennaye once again.”
Bokenham expressed his enthusiasm about returning: “I’m stoked to be coming back to the Pirates. I’ve seen how well the squad has been building this year, and I’m eager to contribute next season. I can’t wait to get stuck in with the lads.”
