Gloucester Rugby have confirmed the appointment of former England international Joel Tomkins as their new defence coach, succeeding Dom Waldouck this summer.
Tomkins, who most recently served as Head Coach at Super League’s Catalans Dragons, brings a wealth of experience from both rugby league and rugby union. Hailing from a celebrated rugby family, his brothers Sam and Logan Tomkins are also professional rugby league players.
During his rugby league career, Joel made over 200 appearances for Wigan Warriors, securing two Super League Grand Finals, the Challenge Cup, and the World Club Challenge titles. He also had stints with Widnes Vikings, Hull Kingston Rovers, and the Catalans Dragons.

In rugby union, Tomkins earned three England caps and competed in the Gallagher Premiership with Saracens between 2011 and 2014. After a season coaching in Perpignan, he is now eager to bring his expertise back to rugby union at Gloucester’s Kingsholm Stadium.
Speaking about his new role, Tomkins said: “I’m thrilled to be joining Gloucester Rugby and returning to rugby union coaching. After discussions with George Skivington and Rob Burgess, I’m excited to contribute to a club with strong ambitions, alongside a talented coaching team and an exciting squad. Gloucester is a prestigious club with passionate supporters, and I’m ready to develop a defensive strategy that enhances the team’s strengths.”
Meanwhile, Dom Waldouck transitions to a newly created position as Head of Player Development, where he will focus on nurturing young talent and overseeing their progression into the first team. Waldouck will also lead Gloucester’s Premiership Rugby Cup campaign during international windows, emphasizing the competition’s role in cultivating future Cherry & Whites stars.
Reflecting on his new role, Waldouck commented: “Gloucester’s vision for the future is clear. Player development has always been a focus in my coaching, and I look forward to supporting emerging talent while advancing the club’s broader goals.”
Joel Tomkins officially begins his coaching tenure with Gloucester Rugby on July 1.
