Gloucester MP Alex McIntyre Supports Calls for Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Resignation

Gloucester’s Member of Parliament, Alex McIntyre, has joined over 70 Labour MPs in calling for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to resign or set a clear timetable for stepping down.

In a statement issued on May 11, McIntyre expressed his loss of confidence in Starmer’s leadership, citing a series of critical missteps, including the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson to a role for which McIntyre deems him unfit. He emphasized that such decisions undermine the principles of accountability and support for victims that should guide public service.

“Recent conversations with constituents and the results from last week’s elections have made one thing clear,” McIntyre said. “The Prime Minister does not have the backing of the country to deliver the change that people voted for—the urgent change we need.”

He stressed that the UK faces unprecedented challenges and that Gloucester residents deserve leadership capable of meeting them. After listening closely to the Prime Minister’s latest speech, McIntyre concluded that Starmer is not the right person to steer the nation through these difficult times.

“I want to look my constituents in the eye and honestly say that we have the right leader,” he added. “Right now, I cannot do that.”

Despite his criticism, McIntyre remains hopeful about Labour’s potential to overcome division and deliver a better future. He believes that for Labour to succeed, the party must shift course, reaffirm its values, and provide the country with effective leadership.

Alongside McIntyre, Gloucestershire’s other Labour MPs—Simon Opher of Stroud and Matt Bishop of the Forest of Dean—have also expressed their lack of support for Sir Keir Starmer.
