Gloucester Motorists Brace for Four Months of Daily Traffic Chaos on M5 and A38

Drivers in Gloucester are enduring significant delays as extensive roadworks cause severe traffic congestion on the A38 at Kingsway and Quedgeley, as well as near junction 12 of the M5. The B4008 Bristol Road is closed at the A38 flyover to facilitate the construction of a new junction for the Hunts Grove estate. This closure, which began earlier this month, is expected to last until October 31.

Motorists describe morning and evening trips as a “daily nightmare,” with long tailbacks along the single-lane A38 and extended queues stretching onto the M5 hard shoulder. One commuter remarked, “It took about 20 minutes just to get from the motorway queue onto Severn Vale Drive.” Another highlighted the “near gridlock” conditions at Kingsway, with traffic jams lasting up to two hours during peak times.

These works, managed by developer Crest Nicholson, have led to significant rerouting. Traffic from Quedgeley heading to the motorway is being diverted through the Naas Lane roundabout and Waterwells, increasing congestion on these alternative routes. The closure has particularly impacted residents, who feel the disruption was poorly planned and are frustrated by the prolonged inconvenience.

Gloucestershire Highways confirmed the closure remains in place until the end of October, with diversions running along the A38 to Bristol Road at Cole Avenue. Councillor Joe Harris, Gloucestershire County Council’s cabinet member for highways, explained the necessity of the closure: “These works are essential to build the new junction for the Hunts Grove Estate. We advise any residents with concerns to contact Crest Nicholson directly.”

While the improvements are aimed at supporting long-term growth in the area, the short-term impact on daily commutes has caused widespread frustration. Residents and commuters alike are eager for the project’s completion and a return to smoother travel through this busy corridor.
