Gloucester Mayor Clarifies Timing of Special Meeting Amid AI Video Controversy

Gloucester Mayor Ashley Bowkett has addressed recent misinformation surrounding the timing of a special City Council meeting held on December 18, which focused on the council’s critical financial situation. The Liberal Democrat councillor, representing Barnwood, insisted that he never refused to hold the meeting but initially suggested postponing it until after Christmas to allow councillors adequate time to review the financial details presented during a briefing on December 17.

Bowkett responded to online speculation fueled by an AI-generated video, which falsely portrayed him as unwilling to engage in a public debate. He stated, “At no point did I refuse such a meeting. I agreed from the start to hold it, and the decision was only about when it should take place.”

After considering further requests from the Conservative group leader, Bowkett brought the meeting forward to December 18 to ensure public scrutiny could occur sooner. He condemned the viral AI content and other online posts that misrepresented his position, calling out some of the correspondence between elected officials as unbecoming. Bowkett emphasized his commitment to reasoned dialogue and dismissed “veiled threats, online stunts or fabricated versions of events.”

Highlighting the significance of his civic role, the Mayor underscored the importance of respecting Gloucester’s longstanding traditions and the office’s non-political nature. He expressed concern that such attacks harm not only him personally but also the city’s heritage and the trust residents place in their elected leaders.

Bowkett reaffirmed his dedication to chairing council meetings impartially and ensuring discussions—whether on the council’s finances or other matters—are conducted openly, respectfully, and with the best interests of Gloucester’s citizens in mind.
