Gloucester Man Honors Late Friend by Running Half-Marathon Carrying a Washing Machine

Giles Tennick of Gloucester is preparing to undertake a truly unique half-marathon challenge: carrying a 30kg washing machine across 13 miles of city streets. This unusual feat is a tribute to his late friend Martin Realey, who tragically took his own life last year.

Giles, 51, and Martin shared a 25-year friendship, having met during their training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2000. Known for his adventurous spirit, Martin had a quirky habit of running half-marathons while carrying his own washing machine, a challenge that Giles admired and now seeks to continue in his friend’s memory.

“This challenge might seem a bit crazy, but those who knew Martin know he was a man who embraced the unconventional,” said Giles, who lives in Longlevens. “He was remarkable, and the world feels emptier without him.”

The event will take place on March 22, with Giles aiming not only to honor Martin’s memory but also to support SSNAP, a charity based at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford that provides vital care and support to sick newborns and their families. Martin had served as CEO of SSNAP before his passing, making the cause deeply meaningful.

“Martin’s runs with the washing machine helped raise awareness for SSNAP in a memorable way,” Giles explained. “I want to keep that spirit alive while giving back to a cause that was close to him.”

Though Giles’ last ultra-marathon—an intense 100km mountain run in Switzerland—was nearly two decades ago, he approaches this challenge with determination and a bit of humor. “I just got the washing machine recently and have been doing test runs around Longlevens, so locals might catch a glimpse and share a laugh at my expense.”

Supporters have already donated generously, with Giles raising £816 towards his £1,000 goal. “The kindness has been incredible, and it would be wonderful to hit or even surpass the target,” he said.

This inspiring act of remembrance and charity shows how friendship and community spirit can transform grief into meaningful action.
