Gloucester Dragon Boat Festival Returns This Weekend with Vibrant Competition

The Gloucester Dragon Boat Festival is making a splash once again this weekend at Gloucester Docks, promising thrilling races and vibrant festivities. Since its inception in 1998, this annual event has captivated the city with its exciting dragon boat races and lively atmosphere.

Teams of up to 11 paddlers—comprising 10 rowers and one drummer—will board striking 30-foot canoe boats, complete with colorful dragon heads and tails. These teams will race a challenging 300-meter course through the scenic Docks area.

Each crew will compete in at least three adrenaline-pumping races, with the top performers advancing to the semi-final and final rounds to vie for the prestigious Dragon Boat Challenge Shield along with various other awards.

Participants are encouraged to wear coordinated team outfits, and fancy dress is highly welcomed to add to the fun. A special prize will be awarded for the Best Dressed Team. Teams should, however, remember that all rowers must wear buoyancy aids while on the water for safety.

The coveted Dragon Boat Challenge Shield will be presented to the Grand Final winners immediately after the last race, accompanied by celebratory bubbly and individual Dragon Boat Winner’s Medals for each team member.

Additional trophies will recognize the top three finishers as well as Best Mixed and Best Dressed Teams, ensuring plenty of competitive spirit and fun.

For those attending as spectators, entry to the festival is free. Donations are encouraged and will benefit local charities including Young Gloucestershire, the Pied Piper Appeal, and Rotary charities.

The festival kicks off tomorrow, May 17, starting at 10am with continuous racing throughout the day, wrapping up between 4pm and 5pm. While the weather forecast predicts overcast skies with a 40% chance of rain in the afternoon, the excitement on the water is guaranteed to shine.
