The Gloucester Dragon Boat Festival is making a vibrant comeback this weekend at Gloucester Docks, promising thrilling races and lively festivities.
Since its inception in 1998, this annual event has brought together enthusiastic teams to compete in visually stunning dragon boats—30-foot canoes adorned with colorful dragon heads and tails. Each boat carries up to 11 paddlers—10 rowers and one drummer—who race a challenging 300-meter course through the historic docks.
Participants are guaranteed at least three exhilarating races, with the best teams advancing to the semi-finals and grand final. Competitors vie for the prestigious Dragon Boat Challenge Shield, along with a range of other trophies and awards that recognize excellence on and off the water.

Teams are encouraged to wear coordinated outfits, with fancy dress strongly welcomed. A special prize will be awarded to the Best Dressed Team. However, safety remains a priority: all participants must wear buoyancy aids during races, so costumes should be designed with this in mind.
The triumphant crew of the Grand Final will receive the coveted Dragon Boat Challenge Shield, celebratory bubbly, and individual winner’s medals. Additional awards will honor the top three finishers, as well as the Best Mixed and Best Dressed Teams.
Spectators are invited to enjoy the action free of charge. While entry is free, donations are encouraged and will support local charities including Young Gloucestershire, the Pied Piper Appeal, and Rotary charities.
Racing begins at 10am on Saturday, May 17, continuing through the afternoon until approximately 4 or 5pm. The forecast predicts overcast skies with a 40% chance of rain between late morning and evening—perfect weather for a spirited day of paddling and community fun.
