Gloucester dominate Harlequins to secure second Premiership win

Gloucester capitalised on a dismal Harlequins performance to claim their second win from two Gallagher Premiership matches this season. The Cherry and Whites scored eight tries, with Ben Loader, Jac Morgan, Will Trenholm, Charlie Atkinson, Seb Atkinson, Will Joseph, Caolan Engfield and George Barton all crossing the line. Barton, who also played at full-back, successfully converted four of those tries.

Gloucester chose to rest key players in the final quarter, which concluded without any points, suggesting the eventual margin could have been even greater. Despite scoring fewer points than in their previous match, Gloucester’s dominance was evident due to Harlequins' poor showing.

Head coach George Skivington praised the team’s defensive strength, noting, “Nilling a Premiership side is exceptional and demonstrates great character. We’ve worked hard to improve our speed off the line defensively, and the way we rallied at the end to maintain a clean sheet was particularly pleasing.”

Skivington acknowledged there was room for improvement and highlighted the squad’s drive for better performance. “At half-time we recognised we were well positioned but needed to capitalise on more chances. Our second-half accuracy was better,” he added.

Meanwhile, Harlequins head coach Jason Gilmore condemned his side’s performance as “totally unacceptable” following their heaviest league defeat since 2000. Missing key players such as England internationals Marcus Smith and Alex Dombrandt, Harlequins were outplayed in all departments and failed to register any points.

Gilmore attributed the defeat to discipline issues that led to a 21-5 penalty deficit. “We struggled for possession due to repeated infringements and allowed Gloucester easy field position, including 20 line-outs close to our try line. Although at half-time we believed a comeback was possible, conceding two early tries after the break ended any realistic hope,” he explained. “From there, we lost control as we chased the game.”

Harlequins’ only notable event was a 17th-minute sin-binning for flanker Will Evans, further hampering their efforts in Gloucestershire.
